FREEPORT — The town is among 21 municipalities to benefit from reduced municipal solid waste tipping fees.
The ecomaine Board of Directors voted to reduce the fee paid per ton of municipal solid waste from $88 to $70.50 beginning July 1.
Freeport board member Rod Regier noted that projections show a savings of $27,270 for Freeport in the coming fiscal year compared to the previous year.
In Pownal — also a member of the municipally-owned ecomaine waste-to-energy power plant and single sort recycling facility — board member Alan Bradstreet said savings could reach $3,015.
Municipalities in ecomaine also voted to reduce their annual assessment fees, saving Freeport another $18,076 and Pownal another $3,990.
Ecomaine board Chairman Michael McGovern said the reductions are possible because the organization, founded in 1976, became debtfree in 2012.
