BRUNSWICK — Coastal Humane Society and Embrace a Vet, two local nonprofits, have announced a joint program to pair Maine veterans with companion dogs or other small pets.

The project, “Paws for Peace” is accepting applications from qualifying veterans now.

“We have seen firsthand how the love of an animal can work wonders in a person’s life; why not offer that same special bond to someone who has given so much of themselves to our country and now may find themselves alone?” Embrace a Vet spokesperson Joy Johnson said.

The application process will consist of a discussion with the veteran to determine his or her interest in owning a pet, then representatives from Embrace a Vet will work with the veteran and staff at Coastal Humane Society to match the best adoption fit.

“This collaboration seems like a natural fit as we strive to be as compassionate to people as we are to pets,” Coastal Humane Society Executive Director Karen Stimpson said. “We have animals every day looking for someone to love them.”
