BRUNSWICK — Merrymeeting Wheelers Bicycle Club will host a “Ride of Silence” Wednesday, May 15, to honor bicyclists killed or injured in collisions with motor vehicles and to protest their deaths.
Locally, this year’s ride will pay tribute to Randall Vye, who was killed while riding along Bath Road in 2001.
The approximately 10-mile ride will begin at 7 p.m. It is free and open to cyclists of all ages; the only requirements are that riders travel no more than 12 mph, wear a helmet and remain silent.
Riders should gather at the gazebo on Park Row at 6:45 p.m. Lights and black arm bands are recommended.
The first ride took place in 2003 to remember Texas endurance rider Larry Schwartz. More than 318 rides in all 50 states and 19 European countries took place in 2012, according to the Topsham cycle club’s Tom Legare.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
