BRUNSWICK — Maxwell Verhey, 20, of Brunswick, Maine, recently completed an 89-day wilderness expedition traveling in the Rocky Mountains with the Lander, Wyo.- based National Outdoor Leadership School.
Verhey and his coursemates traveled to some of the most dramatic places in the southern Wind River Range of Wyoming. Students learned technical climbing skills, how to fish, and had formal classes on the greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, geology and land management.
Verhey also traveled 84 miles on the Green River through Desolation Canyon in whitewater kayaks and rafts, hiked a total of 164 miles, and learned how to build snow shelters, how to assess avalanches at a basic level, and ski deep powder.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
