BRUNSWICK — A Brunswick police cruiser was hit from behind while stopped for a pedestrian on Mill Street Thursday night.
The two-vehicle crash happened at 5:25 p.m., at the intersection of Mill and Cumberland streets. Lt. Tom Garrepy of the Brunswick Police Department said a 2013 Chevrolet Caprice police cruiser, driven by Officer Mark Steele, and a car in front of him, were stopped for a pedestrian in the crosswalk on Mill Street.
Garrepy said Steele saw a 2000 Jeep traveling west on Mill Street approaching and could see it wasn’t going to stop. He took an evasive measure and attempted to drive out around the car in front of him. The Jeep struck the back of the cruiser.
The Jeep was driven by Ann Beckwith, 52, of Westbrook. Garrepy said she
was not issued charges. No one was injured, though Steele was taken to
the hospital for evaluation but then returned to work.
The car in front of the cruiser was not involved in the crash. There was no estimate yet this morning on the damage to the cruiser.
