BATH — Nancy Harriman, an educator in Bath public schools for 10 years, will leave her position as principal at Fisher Mitchell School at the end of the current school year.

Harriman has been principal at Fisher Mitchell School for three years. Official notice of her resignation will be filed Monday night, during the Regional School Unit 1 meeting at Dike-Newell School.

“I told the staff two weeks ago,” Harriman said Thursday. “It’s healthy for the school and the individual to seek new areas.”

Harriman declined to specify her reason for leaving, or what she will do next. A Southport native, Harriman said she doesn’t want to move.

I’d like to do system-level work,” said Harriman, who had been director of instruction and curriculum coordinator in Bath schools from 2003 to 2010.

Harriman said she is happy that Fisher Mitchell has been involved in community-based work during her tenure. Good relationships with Bath Iron Works, the Department of Marine Resources, parents volunteers and others have forged that relationship, she said.

“I feel like we’ve made some progress,” she said. “In the last three years, we’ve had some great community involvement. We have so many volunteers — some just come in and read with kids. We have so many kids who need that.”

Harriman thanked her colleagues.

“I have nothing but good things to say about my colleagues at FMS,” she said. “It’s been a privilege to be here as principal for 3 years. We’ve all worked very hard together to support our students and their families.

“We wanted the school to be a supportive, engaging place to learn and grow — where all students gain confidence in themselves as learners  and  take pride in their achievements. When you walk in the door it’s inviting and student work is on display throughout the school. Judge for yourself – how have we done?”

Harriman earned her Ph.D in special education at Penn State. She did her undergraduate studies in psychology at Colby College, graduating in 1974.
