TOPSHAM
The Highlands of Topsham is helping next-door neighbor Williams-Cone Elementary School obtain a new playground with a large donation.
On Tuesday, March 19, during lunch recess at the 19 Perkins St. school, The Highlands will present a check for $20,000 and ask other businesses to get involved for Maine’s most valuable resource: our children.
“Given the state of our current economy, school districts are struggling to provide for basic educational needs,” said Williams-Cone Elementary School Principal Randa C. Rineer. “This leaves very little money for other things, including playground equipment.
“Play helps children with social skills and builds environmental awareness and science skills, plus provides them with the physical activity,” Rineer said.
Residents from The Highlands, Williams-Cone students and administrators will attend Tuesday’s event.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
