BATH — The fifth annual Bath Blarney Days kicks into high spirits tonight for a weekend that celebrates all things Irish.

Tonight poet Helene McGlaughlin will host a “More than Blarney” evening of traditional Irish poetry, music and a slide show of Irish castles and landscapes from 5-6:30 p.m. at Bath City Hall, 55 Front St. Tea and scones will be served.

Immediately following at 6:30 p.m. — and just across the street from City Hall — Bath Dance Works will host a family dance led by Sharon Pyne with live music featuring Irish jigs and reels on flute and fiddle.

In the more irreverent Irish-American spirit, at 8 p.m. Fields for Our Future will host an “Ugly Green” contest at Mae’s Café.

On Saturday, the day begins with a Fun Run at 9 a.m. and Shamrock Sprint 5K at 9:30 a.m., also to benefit Fields for Our Future. The race will begin at the corner of Washington and Centre streets, with registration from 8 to 9 a.m. Advance registration forms are available online at visitbath.com or at the Bath Recreation Department. Themed costumes encouraged.

Following the race, at 11 a.m., the St. Patrick’s Day parade will feature the bagpipers of the Maine Safety Pipe and Drum Corp. The parade will proceed from St. Mary’s Church on Lincoln Street to Centre, down Centre to Front Street, and north on Front to Linden Street, ending at the Gazebo in City Park by the Patten Free Library. Community members are invited to join the parade by registering in advance at the Main Street Bath office at 15 Commercial St.

At 1 p.m., there will be a “Tug ’O War” competition at Bath City Hall sponsored by Universe Gym.

The day will end with live music and festivities at downtown Bath pubs, and an evening of dancing at the second annual Blarney Ball beginning at 8 p.m. at Winter Street Center, 880 Washington St.

On Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, pubs will be open all day with food, drink, Celtic music and Irish-themed specials. An Irish Soda Bread baking contest will take place at 1:30 p.m. at Now You’re Cooking, with the public invited to help the judges in selecting the “popular choice.” Entries should be dropped off that day between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The weekend will be capped off with the drawing of a winner from Bath’s “Pot ’O Gold Passport Challenge.” Participants must travel through downtown Bath to have their passports stamped at 36 locations, each of which has donated an item to the pot.

Passports are available at businesses throughout the downtown or online at visitbath.com. Completed passports should be dropped off at the ballot box in Bath City Hall by Monday, March 18, to be entered in a drawing to win the pot full of donated treasures from downtown Bath businesses.
