TOPSHAM
Police identified the man they believe jumped to his death early Sunday from the Frank J. Wood Bridge.
Topsham police Lt. Fred Dunn said Monday the man has been identified as Douglas Palmer, 55, of Topsham.
Topsham fire, rescue and police personnel were called to the “Green Bridge” spanning the Androscoggin River at 2:41 p.m. Sunday after a passer-by spotted a body beneath the bridge and called 911.
“It appears the person jumped off the bridge, but there was no witness to that,” Topsham police Sgt. Robert Ramsay said Sunday.
Topsham Police Chief Christopher Lewis said police believe Palmer jumped early Sunday morning, possibly around sunrise.
Topsham Fire Chief Brian Stockdale said the department’s rescue and then engine squad responded Sunday with a total of about 10 personnel.
The nearby dam wasn’t running, providing rescue workers with access to the rocky area where the man was found, Stockdale said.
