BRUNSWICK

A private school for children with special needs will become one of Brunswick Landing’s newest tenants when it relocates from Bath in August.

The Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority signed agreements with five new landlords March 5, part of a $14 million backlog in potential deals.

One of the approved agreements was with Priority Group, the Topsham developer, which agreed to pay $1.1 million for three acres and two buildings totaling 36,000 square feet at Burbank Avenue and Pegasus Street.

Priority Group President Jim Howard told The Times Record that, once renovated, the building would provide educational and administrative space for a tenant.

Renovations he valued at $1.5 million are to begin within 60 days, and the tenant would move in by Aug. 1, Howard said.

One of the tenants will be the Merrymeeting Center for Child Development, a private school serving children with autism and developmental disabilities in Bath.

Bart Beattie, executive director of Providence Service Corp. of Maine, which operates the Merrymeeting Center, told the Bangor Daily News the renovations would allow it to expand operations.

The center provides services for children “who struggle in a typical school environment,” Beattie told the Bangor Daily News. It also provides child care, developmental preschool and homeand community-based treatment programs. The Bath center, at 2 Davenport Circle in downtown Bath, employs 90 people.

The Merrymeeting Center is an approved private special purpose school, according to Maine Department of Education spokesman David Connerty-Marin.
