Ben Tindall, a graduating senior at Merriconeag Waldorf High School, has been named one of more than 3,000 candidates in the 2013 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.
Candidates were selected from 3.4 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in 2013.
A news release from the school says inclusion in the program, now in its 49th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors.
Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.
The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 citizens appointed by the president, will make final selection of the Scholars, selecting one young man and one young woman from each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and U.S. students living abroad; 15 students at-large; and up to 20 students from the creative and performing arts. The U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May.
Tindall is the son of Jeffrey Tindall and Susan Sonntag of Durham.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
