
Almost $14 million in potential land sales and commercial leases await town approval of a subdivision plan at Brunswick Landing, according to Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority Executive Director Steve Levesque.
The subdivision plan is scheduled to make its latest appearance before the Planning Board tonight at 7 at the town’s meeting room at Brunswick Station.
The redevelopment authority inherited the former Brunswick Naval Air Station from the U.S. Navy as a single parcel and is tasked by the Legislature to redevelop it with businesses and people. But before it can be marketed to “a big backlog” of prospective tenants, the large single lot must be cut into smaller lots that conform to state and local codes.
The process has been at times complicated and protracted, with some town factions complaining of too little scrutiny and others bemoaning too much.
Regardless of the politics involved, Levesque said MRRA’s job is to sell or lease the property or it — and, ultimately, the town — will suffer a lack of taxable property and commerce.
He told The Times Record that as much as $7 million in property sales “is directly waiting” on the subdivision plan’s approval, with a similar amount in potential commercial leases.
About 50 acres of property that interests developers are similarly stacked up and waiting for resolution, Levesque said.
Of an approximately 1 million total square feet of space, 370,000 already have been leased to tenants since the military’s departure. At least two other prospective tenants are readying to move onto Brunswick Landing. Levesque declined to disclose details.
