Scarborough woman honored ?for health work

Melissa Cookson of Scarborough received the Outstanding Achievement Award from her employer, Norway Savings Bank, on Tuesday, Feb. 5. This award, given at their Annual Employee Celebration, is given to the employee who has achieved a new level of health and wellness during the past year.

Cookson, 47 and a three-year survivor of breast cancer, has been a member of Zone 3 Fitness since May 2012. In those nine months, she has lost over 20 pounds, run her first 5K race, and is training for the Tough Mountain Challenge, a 3-mile obstacle adventure race coming up in July at Sunday River. Most importantly she has dropped her health risk indicators from the high risk range to the low risk range.

Each year, Norway Savings Bank recognizes one of their employees who has been a leader and shining example in living a healthy life. Cookson knew that she needed to make some changes to her daily habits to decrease her health risks. She attends Z3 Circuit Training four to five times a week, which gives her a combination of cardio, strength and balance workout.

“The first time I did the circuit training I thought I was going to die,” she said, “but I was determined that I was going to stick with it and get my healthy body back. And even though it was a hard workout, it was fun and the people at the gym were great. I love the energy and the variety of workouts.”

Kindergarten information

Scarborough Kindergarten Information Night will be held 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 5, in the cafeteria at Scarborough High School.

Parents are invited for an overview of the 2013-2014 Scarborough kindergarten program. Registration paperwork will be available and screening appointments will be made for the week of March 25.
