BRUNSWICK — Ashton Johnson, age 84, of Brunswick, Maine died on February 2, 2013 from complications of Lymphoma.

Born in New York City on June 5th, 1928, Mr. Johnson was the son of Alfred Ashton Johnson MD and Agatha Gennette Johnson.

In 1969 Mr. Johnson moved to Maine from Pond Ridge, New York to join the trust department of Canal National Bank, and was later employed as a vice president and trust officer at Casco Bank where he remained for 20 years, retiring in 1992. Three months later he joined the newly formed Maine Bank and Trust Company, retiring in his 75th year.

In 1960 Mr. Johnson married Anne Harvey Hilkert of Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, and after her death in 1996, he married Linda Marchky Cronkhite, Ph.D. In 1998.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, Bruce Hilkert Johnson of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and Craig Ashton Johnson of Los Angeles, and a grandson Ryan Ashton Johnson of Windham, Maine.

Mr. Johnson is also survived by a brother, Geoffrey Ashton Johnson of New York City and a sister, Patricia Ashton Johnson Friedman of White Plains, New York.

Mr. Johnson was a graduate of the Dwight School of New York City and received his baccalaureate degree from New York University. After service in the Army during the Korean War, he received a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania during which time he was on the English and History faculties of the Philadelphia Museum College of Art and the English Department faculty of the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1956 Mr. Johnson was employed by the American Bankers Association in New York City, first in the editorial division of the American Institute of Banking and later as an assistant director of the National Trust School and an assistant to the Director of the ABA Trust Division.

For three years before coming to Maine, Mr. Johnson was employed as an account executive at the Merrill Anderson Company, an advertising company in New York City.

Mr. Johnson served on several professional, civic and non-profit boards including president of the Maine Estate Planning Council, the Trust Committee of the Maine Bankers Association, the staff of the National Trust School at Northwestern University, the Lark Society (Portland String Quartet), PORTopera, Portland Chamber Music Society, Greater Portland Landmarks, Funeral Consumers Alliance of Maine, and the Vestries of Trinity Church in Portland and St. Paul’s Church in Brunswick.

At Mr. Johnson’s request there will be no funeral or memorial service.
