SCARBOROUGH (AP) — The Scarborough Town Council is scheduled to meet this week to vote on an oyster nursery off the Pine Point Beach pier.
Abigail Carroll started buying oysters as juveniles to test her untrained hand at raising them at a farm in the Scarborough River.
Last year, she had an aboveground nursery in Biddeford Pool, but it was costly to pump water into the nursery and to transport the oysters to Scarborough.
Having a floating nursery at the pier will improve the flow of water and foster oyster growth.
Town Manager Tom Hall said aquaculture wasn’t on Scarborough’s radar screen when planning for the pier, but considering its negligible impact, he sees no reason not to encourage the use.
The meeting is Wednesday

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
