A panel discussion on preventing violence and “promoting community understanding” is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Jan. 31, at the Freeport High School Performing Arts Center.
The discussion is sponsored by Freeport Community Services as part of its TARP — Tolerance and Respect Project — program and features a panel of experts in issues such as mental health, gun laws and regulations, school safety, parenting and “the burdens of the culture of masculinity.”
Among the panelists will be Paula Silsby, a former U.S. Attorney; Drew Wing, executive director of Boys To Men; Rebecca Francis, from Community
Counseling Services, and state Rep. Sara Gideon, DFreeport.
Located at 30 Holbrook St., the discussion will be free and open to the public. Child care will be available free of charge; parents should call ahead to book a spot.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
You can read more here about our commenting policy and terms of use. More information is also found on our FAQs.
