A winter storm is blamed for a rash of incidents that struck Gorham and Westbrook on Wednesday morning.

Lt. Christopher Sanborn of Gorham Police Department at 11 a.m. reported three car crashes, multiple cars off the road, a school bus with no children aboard that slid off North Gorham Road, and an oil truck rollover. There were no serious crashes in Gorham, Sanborn said.

In Westbrook, Capt. Tom Roth reported eight accidents including those drivers that skidded off streets. Roth said most of the incidents happened during the morning commute. “It’s still treacherous out there,” Roth said shortly before noon.

Sanborn said a Pit Stop oil truck rolled over on its side on Allison Road, off Wescott Road. The driver was transported to a hospital as a precautionary measure, police said.

Oil was not leaking from the truck, Sanborn said, but the Maine Department of Environmental Protection was called to the site. Sanborn described the mishap as a “slow speed” incident caused by conditions.

The rollover shut down the road and following another crash Gorham temporarily closed Route 25 near Wood Road.

Because of slippery conditions, Roth said Westbrook Police had considered closing East Bridge Street to traffic until sand trucks arrived.

Norm Justice, director of facilities management and transportation for Gorham schools, described the school bus incident as minor. The woman driving the bus had already finished her run and no children were aboard, Justice said.

Gorham Schools were dismissed early on Wednesday; the high school let out at 11 a.m.; middle school, 11:10; and elementary schools, noon.

The storm occurred on a regularly scheduled early release day in Westbrook but afternoon student activities were not held.
