OLD ORCHARD BEACH — All cylinders were clicking for the Old Orchard Beach boys basketball team Friday night, as four Seagulls scored in double figures in a 73-57 victory over Poland at Old Orchard Beach High School.
The Seagulls stepped on the gas pedal from the onset, going on a 10-2 run after the Knights held an early 5-2 lead.
“The last couple games we haven’t been coming out very hot. So we tried to push right out of the start,” said Anthony Langella-Laws, who had 17 points for the Seagulls.
“Tonight the focus was on getting our legs underneath us, and getting so we can run, and force the tempo,” said Old Orchard Beach head coach John Regan. “And I think we did that.”
The Seagulls got the lead to double digits until Poland reeled them in toward the end of the first quarter. C.J. Martin banked a 3-pointer in off the glass at the buzzer for the Knights to make it 22-15 after one quarter.
Poland stayed close for a while thanks to hitting 3-pointers that were given to them by the Old Orchard Beach zone defense, as well as making free throws in what was a tightly-called first half.
But the Seagulls’ up-tempo, full-court style was too much for Poland, as Joey Gildard and Jimmy Strohm took turns hitting shots in transition. Strohm, who came off the bench and sparked the Seagulls’ second quarter offense, scored 11 of his 12 points in the quarter.
“No question, Jimmy Strohm probably played his best game for us this year,” said Regan, who also complimented Strohm’s defense when Quincy Grace got into foul trouble.
The Seagulls pushed their lead to 40-31 at halftime, with Grace scoring a quiet nine points while spending much of the second quarter on the bench.
The Gulls got off to a hot start again to start the second half, as they opened on a 10-4 run. Langella-Laws took his turn as the leader of the offense, scoring nine points in the quarter. Grace and Gildard chipped in with five and six points, respectively, as the Seagulls left the Knights in their dust.
“We’ll just keep running and running, and wear teams down,” Langella-Laws said about the Gulls’ relentless style.
Tyler Michaud hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the third quarter for Poland to cut the deficit to 60-45, but the game was out of reach by that point.
The only thing that slowed the Seagulls down in the fourth quarter was themselves, as they tried to run the clock out and prevent a miracle Poland comeback. Grace hit an open 3-pointer to start the quarter, and Langella-Laws made his free throws as Old Orchard Beach won comfortably.
Grace led all scorers with 19 points, and Gildard had 16, to go along with Langella-Laws and Strohm in double-digit scorers for Old Orchard Beach.
Martin led Poland with 16 points and Michaud had 15 on five 3-pointers in what was a tough offensive night for the Knights against the Seagulls’ pressure defense.
The win put the Seagulls a game over .500 at 5-4, and hopefully on the right track.
“We’re going to try and keep the ball rolling,” said Langella-Laws, in what is a metaphor for how the Seagulls want to continue playing for the rest of the season.
