The Shaw’s supermarket chain is among five retail brands being sold to an investor group.
Supervalu announced today it will sell all its Albertsons, Acme, Jewel-Osco, Shaw’s and Star Market stores and related Osco pharmacies to an affiliate of Cerberus Capital Management in a transaction valued at $3.3 billion.
The transaction includes 877 stores.
Shaw’s — which has Mid-coast stores in Bath, Brunswick and Freeport — began in Portland in 1860. Today, Shaw’s and Star Market employ approximately 25,000 in every New England state but Connecticut — though the company has experienced several rounds of employee layoffs.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
