Seniors’ meal rescheduled

Following a postponement, Westbrook Senior Citizens will be served a Christmas dinner at noon on Monday, Jan. 9, in Westbrook Community Center, 426 Bridge St.

The menu includes roast pork with gravy, mashed potatoes, peas, applesauce and apple pie with whipped topping. Louis Philippe will entertain.

Old canal topic?at historical society

Members of the Westbrook Historical Society, in their meeting at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, will hear about the Cumberland and Oxford Canal that once ran through Westbrook.

Historian David Tanguay will be the guest speaker. The public is welcome to attend.

Firefighters set ?Jan. 14 blood drive

The Westbrook Firefighters Local 340 will be holding a blood drive Monday, Jan, 14, from 9 a.m,-2 p.m., at the Westbrook Public Safety Building, 570 Main St.

Those wishing to donate blood are asked to call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS.

Post 62 to meet

The Stephen W. Manchester Post 62 of the American Legion will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in its headquarters at 17 Dunn St.

A meal will be served at 6 p.m. followed by a business meeting.

Gatine, Peoples named to committees

Local representatives Drew Gattine, D-Westbrook, and Ann Peoples, D-Westbrook, have been appointed to legislative committees for the upcoming session.

Gattine, a first-term legislator, will be serving on the Health and Human Services Committee. The committee works on policy regarding parts of the Dirigo Health Act, MaineCare and Medicaid. The committee also oversees policy concerning mental health, tobacco sales, medical marijuana and homelessness and public assistance.

“In these tough economic times, we need to make sure that the right mix of public services are in place to keep Mainers healthy and provide for their basic needs,” Gattine said in a statement. “At the same time it is critical that we find creative ways to manage these programs more efficiently so that taxpayers get the optimal value and clients of these programs receive the best care.”

Peoples, a fourth-term legislator, will serve on the Transportation Committee. The committee works on policy regarding the Department of Transportation, Maine Turnpike Authority, highway and bridge construction, aeronautics, waterways and railroads.

“Excellent roads and bridges are essential to building a sustainable economy in Maine,” Peoples said. “I look forward to working with members of both parties to improve our state’s infrastructure.”

They were assigned to serve on committees by Speaker of the House Mark Eves.
