Obstetric crews at Mid Coast Hospital welcomed the region’s first baby of 2013 when Cheyenne Marie Smith was born at 12:03 p.m. Tuesday.
Parents Sondra and Nicholas Smith of Bowdoin didn’t plan it this way.
“She was our surprise baby,” Sondra Smith said late Tuesday between feedings, naps and checking messages from her husband, who was home caring for Cheyenne’s 1- and 3-year-old brothers.
“She actually was due a couple of days ago,” said Smith, who works at L.L. Bean’s order fulfillment center in Freeport and also attends college full-time. “She’s the first baby I’ve had late; I was early with both of our boys.”
Cheyenne — whose name was chosen for its relative rarity — came into the world 20.5 inches long and weighing seven pounds, nine ounces.
She was the first in the area, but not the only: Three local women were in labor New Year’s Eve, officials at Mid Coast’s matenity ward said.
Two babies were born Dec. 31, and a little girl was born to a Newcastle family at 1:22 p.m. Tuesday.
