Maine Bureau for Parks and lands as well as the Maine Department of Agriculture are sponsoring several “First Day Hikes” Jan. 1 around Maine.

Locally, a hike takes place at Sebago Lake State Park beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the park’s headquarters, 11 Park Access Road, Casco.

According to organizers of the moderate 1.5-mile hike, there will be views of the Songo River and leaders will discuss the mixed woodland habitat and geological history of the park.

There is no minimum age but children must be accompanied by an adult and dogs must be on leash.

Organizers suggest participants bring a water bottle, sturdy footwear, warm clothing (dress in layers), hat, mittens or gloves, snowshoes (if you have them – not required).

The hike will be held snow or shine except in case of extreme weather conditions. Call the park at 693-6231 for more information.
