WOOLWICH — Kaden Malcolm, a sixth-grade student at Woolwich Central School, won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee held Dec. 17.

The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 25th annual National Geographic Bee.

The school winners, including Kaden, will now take a written test; up to 100 of the top scorers on that test in each state will then be eligible to compete in their state Bee April 5, 2013.

Following the state competition, a National Bee will be held in Washington, D.C. The National Geographic Society will provide an all-expenses – paid trip to Washington, D.C., for state champions and teacher-escorts to participate in the Bee National Championship round May 20-22.

In addition to the WCS winner, nine other students, winners of the individual classroom Bees, represented their classes in the school level Bee. Competing were fourthgraders Ella McWalter and Avery Smith, fifth-grader Ariana Rutledge, sixth-graders Sydney McCarron and Kaden Malcolm, seventh-graders Tanisha MacKenzie and Jack Ouimette and eighth-graders Aidan Smart and Everett Bates.

Second-place finisher was Jack Ouimette and third was Aidan Smart.
