FREEPORT — Holiday music lovers will get to hear Portland’s community band, the Italian Heritage Center Concert Band, at a bigger, better venue this year. The band will perform “An All-American Christmas” at Freeport Performing Arts Center, 30 Holbrook St., Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m.

This will be the 25th holiday concert for the band, which has about 70 members. In past years, the band has performed at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland and other locations, but this year is a step up, Bob Swerdlow, vice president of the band, said in a news release. “We had an opportunity to play in the Freeport Performing Arts Center during the 9/11 events this year. That theater is fun to perform in — it is larger and the acoustics are excellent.”

The concert will include several other firsts for the band, including a director’s pre-concert talk, a premiere of a new arrangement and the appearance of a guest ensemble.

The band’s director, Nina K. Oatley-Walsh, will present a pre-concert talk at 6:15 p.m. about the program, her choice of music, and the band. The talk is free and there will be an opportunity for questions from the public.

The performance will include the premiere of a new arrangement of “Stars and Stripes Forever and Ever,” a re-casting of John Philip Sousa’s original. The resulting piece is fun and playful, both familiar and new at the same time a news release said.

In addition, the band has invited Low Commotion, a 12- piece tuba and low brass ensemble, to play a few pieces as part of the concert.

Tickets — available at the door — are $10, $7 for senior citizens and free for students.
