DURHAM — An evening of jazz piano with Tom Whitehead will be dedicated to his parents, Edie and Macy Whitehead, on Saturday, at 7 p.m. at Durham Friends Meeting House. 532 Quaker Meetinghouse Road.
A news release describes the concert as follows:
Whitehead has played piano since the age of 4. He was first inspired to play by his parents, Macy and Edie Whitehead, to whom this performance is dedicated. His current style of piano playing is a virtual “musical gumbo” of jazz, swing, stride, New Orleans R&B, blues and boogie woogie.
Whitehead wrote and produced his first CD of original music in 2002, entitled “Papa Roux.” He has appeared on many other recordings, playing piano, guitar and accordion.
He has led ensembles, both large and small in San Francisco and here in Maine. Whitehead currently teaches piano and guitar at the Waynflete School in Portland and at 317 Maine Street Community Music School in Yarmouth.
Admission is by donation and proceeds benefit Durham Friends DYF Youth Group. For more information, call 240-1637.
