FRANKFORT, Ky. — A national Republican political action committee has jumped into elections for the Kentucky House and Senate with $350,000 in spending attacking Democrats in 13 races.

The Republican State Leadership Committee, based in Washington, filed reports with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance showing that it has spent $354,621 on advertising in three state Senate seats and 10 state House seats leading up to Tuesday’s election.

The Courier-Journal reported that the group’s spending helps offset an apparent financial advantage for Democrats in state legislative races.

Campaign finance reports have shown Democratic candidates have raised more than their Republican opponents as of Oct. 22. In addition, a Democratic Super PAC called Kentucky Family Values has reported raising more than half a million to help Democrats on Tuesday’s ballot.

The Republican State Leadership Committee is the type of political committee registered with the Internal Revenue Service. Independent committees such as the Republican State Leadership Committee may accept contributions of unlimited amounts. Candidate campaigns are limited to $1,000 contributions.

The Republican State Leadership Committee works to help elect Republicans in state legislative races across the country. It files monthly reports on contributions and expenses with the IRS. While it does not file names of its contributors with the state, it must report to the state election registry details of its spending on Kentucky state races.

“We saw which races would make a difference in chamber control … and we made a decision to get involved here,” said Adam Temple, spokesman for the Republican State Leadership Committee.

Democrats have a 58-41 majority in the Kentucky House. Republicans have a 23-15 majority in the Senate.
