BATH
Hyde School students, a few faculty members and parents have an unusual road trip planned.
A couple of vehicles will be used in the 196-mile journey from Bath to Hyde’s sister school in Woodstock, Conn.
But the vehicles won’t be the primary means of getting from Point A to Point B. A dozen people are signed up for the Nov. 16 “The Flight of the Phoenix,” to be run in five-mile increments.
As part of Hyde School’s community service commitment, money raised in the run will be donated to the Mobile Food Truck, which feeds the hungry outside Grace Episcopal Church.
Colin Foye, a science teacher and athletic trainer at Hyde, said students are enthusiastic to help, but also want to make it as fun as possible.
“The kids are talking about planting their flag on the Connecticut campus and inspiring some competition, so that maybe they’ll run up here next year,” Foye said. “They’ve put together a funky little video.
“This is something you don’t do every day, so hopefully the kids will remember it.”
The group plans to leave the Bath campus early on the morning on Nov. 16 — 5:30 a.m. early.
The goal, Foye said, is to arrive in Woodstock between 5 and 6 p.m. the next day, for a trip of about 30 hours.
The students are athletes, and most either run cross country or play soccer, Foye said.
“If we at least run 10- minute miles,” Foye said, “we can make it. The kids are all pumped up.”
Plans call for everyone to run about 20 miles, Foye said.
There will be two groups of six runners each. Each group will be responsible for a three-hour stretch, and then rest in a vehicle for the next run.
The runners will mostly follow U.S. Route 1, breaking off from the road in Yarmouth and north of Boston.
Once at Hyde School in Woodstock, some parents will pick their kids up and take them home for Thanksgiving break. Teachers and parents will head back to Bath.
To raise money for the Mobile Food Truck, each runner pays a $20 entry fee and gets five donations of any amount. There also is an online donation link to Good Shepherd Food Bank, which would make that donation to the food truck, Foye said. Hyde is hoping local businesses will donate supplies, he said.
People interested in donating can make checks out to Good Shepherd Food Bank and mail them to Hyde School, c/o Jenny Collinson, 616 High Street, Bath, ME 04530.
The runners are Colin Foye, Mukaye Muchimuti, Peter E. Rowe, Jacob Kendall, Doug Preston, Margot Cundy, Purple Zhao, Austin Wang, Talin Rowe, Isaac Preston, Cody Mitchell, Griffin Palola, Luis Allen, Keifer Cundy and Wang Xi.
