GORHAM – Gorham residents can see first hand some of the duties of Gorham police and firefighters during an open house at the Public Safety building from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27.
The building is located at 270 Main St.
For adults, activities include a simulator on distracted driving, while kids will have the opportunity to get the feel of a real fire hose.
“We’re a full-service department, and whatever the community needs we can accommodate,” said Scott Dunn, the firefighter-paramedic who headed up organizing the open house, adding they will demonstrate everything they do.
Lt. Christopher Sanborn of Gorham Police Department said it’s a community event to educate and demonstrate services provided to the community. A variety of activities will include tours of the building that houses both the police station and the central station for firefighters.
Police will exhibit a cruiser and firefighters will show several pieces of their firefighting and life-saving equipment.
Information will be available about the Gorham/Westbrook TRIAD, which is a program for senior citizens, and Gorham’s recently launched Yellow DOT program aimed at saving lives at highway accidents.
The Gorham Volunteers in Police Service will conduct iris scans for children’s identification and Scarborough Police Explorers will be operating the seat belt convincer.
Installations of kids’ car seats will be conducted throughout the open house, along with fire prevention demonstrations. Dunn said paramedics would show how they monitor hearts of patients.
Dunn said Smokey the Bear and Sparky the Firedog would be on hand for the kids, who will also have fun in a bounce house. Balloons will be given to kids.
“We look forward to having as many community members attend as possible,” Sanborn said.
