Haas joins exclusive club with Federer, Nadal, Hewitt

With a win at the Ernst Bank Open in Vienna, Tommy Haas became the fourth still-active tennis player to win 500 matches on the ATP Tour, joining Roger Federer (871), Rafael Nadal (583) and Lleyton Hewitt (566).

The 34-year-old German, who turned pro in 1996 and has won 13 career titles, reached the mark with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over American Jesse Levine in the second round Thursday.

Haas is the 38th player in the Open era to achieve the feat.

Jimmy Connors leads the all-time list with 1,243 wins, followed by Ivan Lendl (1,071), Guillermo Vilas (923), John McEnroe (875) and Federer.

STOCKHOLM OPEN: Tomas Berdych reached the quarterfinals at Stockholm with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Estonia’s Jurgen Zopp.

The Czech will next face Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny and remains in line to qualify for the season-ending ATP World Tour finals in London.

Top seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, also hoping to qualify for London, advanced with a 6-3, 7-6 (6) win over Go Soeda of Japan. The Frenchman faces Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine in the quarterfinals after Stakhovsky beat Spain’s Feliciano Lopez, 7-6 (5), 7-5.

KREMLIN CUP: Former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic and 2011 U.S. Open champion Samantha Stosur advanced to the quarterfinals at Moscow with straight-sets victories, while top-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov bowed out of the men’s event.

The 11th-ranked Ivanovic broke 19-year-old Russian qualifier Valeria Solovieva three times in a 6-1, 6-4 victory, while Stosur struggled past Alize Cornet of France, 7-6 (6), 7-5.

BASKETBALL

NBADL: The Maine Red Claws will have the fourth pick when the NBA Development League holds its draft Nov. 2.

The draft will take place at 7 p.m. via teleconference with the Boston Celtics’ operations department making the Red Claws’ selections from Waltham, Mass.

The selection order is based on the inverse ranking of each team’s 2011-12 record.

Each team will be given one pick in each of eight rounds. No trades will be permitted during the draft, and only players signed to the league’s standard player contract are eligible to be selected.

The Red Claws have no selections in the second or third round after trading those picks to the Texas Legends for Jerome Randle and Lawrence Hill last season.

EUROPE: England’s Football Association fined Chelsea’s Ashley Cole $145,000 for insulting the governing body in an offensive Twitter post.

The England defender had reacted angrily to an FA commission questioning the evidence he gave in defending teammate John Terry against a charge of racially abusing an opponent.

The tweet, subsequently deleted, read “Hahahahaa, well done (hash)fa I lied did I,” followed by a vulgar expression.

GOLF

McGladrey ClasSic: Bud Cauley, 22, took a big step toward his first PGA win with an 8-under 62 at St. Simons Island, Ga.

It was his best score on the tour, and it gave him a share of the lead with Marco Dawson.

The McGladrey Classic is where Cauley did well enough to earn his PGA Tour card, joining an elite list of players who went from college to a full tour card without going to Q-school.

MOTORSPORTS

NASCAR: Denny Hamlin didn’t think about Dale Earnhardt Jr. after hitting the wall hard, wrecking his car and becoming dizzy on Thursday morning at Kansas Speedway.

But NASCAR certainly did.

So Hamlin, who said he “got his bell rung” in the accident, was taken to the infield care center, examined and told to stay out of the car for an hour before a re-evaluation cleared him to resume racing.

Just last week, Earnhardt was sidelined for at least two weeks because of a concussion after a crash at Kansas Speedway on Aug. 29.
