Town officials and representatives from the Brunswick firefighters union have agreed to a three-year contract renewal.
Terms include:
— a 2 percent cost-of-living increase for each of the three years effective in January;
— a 25-cents-per-hour stipend for firefighters who achieve certification in hazardous waste response;
— for all firefighters who have been with the department for at least three years, a new requirement that they earn hazardous waste response certification by January 2015; and
— all newly-hired firefighters will be required to get the certification within two years.
Town Manager Gary Brown said the town will try to find funding for aircraft incident response training.
Brown said the new contract will cost the town about $34,000 more than the current agreement, which expires on Dec. 31.
He added that the increase already has been figured into the town’s budget.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
