Historical society plans tribute, meeting

A program in tribute to five Pownal residents who did much for the town during their lifetimes will be presented by the Pownal Scenic and Historical Society on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m,. in Mallett Hall.

The program, in digital-slide show format, will pay tribute to William “Bill” DeWitt, Carl “Sam” Mason, Edna Snow Menchen, Marion Knight Reed and Frank Knight. It will be held in the stage room. Afterward, families and friends can share memories, view relevant exhibits in the DeWitt Room and enjoy refreshments.

These five residents all died within the span of less than a single year. All lived, or their families had lived, on Hodsdon Road for generations. All had served the towns in which they lived, and all were valued members of the historical society since its founding in 1970. They and their families were inter-related, participated in town government, belonged to area churches, attended local schools and operated early businesses such as ones in the granite and lumber industries.

The society also encourages residents to attend its annual meeting on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., in the DeWitt Room at Mallett Hall, and support the society as it looks to the future. Major acquisitions to the society will be on display and their provenance discussed. Pownal Scenic and Historical Society supported projects for 2012 will be reviewed, and a budget for 2013 will be adopted. For more information, call Donna Boyles at 688-4780
