CUMBERLAND – Izzy Hutnack’s impressive first season just keeps getting better.
Hutnack figured in on all the scoring Tuesday night with two goals and an assist to lead Greely to a 3-0 win over Waynflete in a Western Maine Conference girls’ soccer game at Greely.
“I’m a little surprised (by the success) but coach says that’s my job on the field as a striker,” said Hutnack, a freshman who leads the Rangers with seven goals.
“That’s what I should be doing. It’s all of our teamwork that leads up to it and when it gets to me, I shoot.”
Hutnack’s two second-half goals cemented the win for the surging Rangers, who extended their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) with the win and moved to 7-3-1.
The first goal came 31/2 minutes into the second half off a pretty give-and-go with Julia Mitiguy to give Greely a 2-0 lead.
Three minutes later Hutnack scored again when she fought through a defender and past Waynflete goaltender Juliana Harwood to register her third two-goal game this season.
“She gives us energy, cleans up the ball unbelievably well and she’s very tough,” said Greely Coach Michael Kennedy.
“I always joke that she looks like she weighs about 80 pounds but she plays like she’s 180 pounds. She’s very physical and aggressive.”
Greely got off to a quick start and grabbed a 1-0 lead two minutes into the game against the previously undefeated Flyers (7-1-4).
Goalkeeper Caton Beaulieu started the play with a drop kick from deep in her end that found Hutnack well past midfield.
Hutnack tapped a pass over to Mitiguy, who wasted little time unleashing a shot that beat Harwood for a 1-0 advantage.
“It’s really important to score early and it definitely gets you into the game,” said Mitiguy. “It’s easier from there on out.
“It’s huge for us to have a good, focused warm-up and put them away early.”
Mitiguy authored another couple of chances as the half progressed, but it was Hutnack who came up with the best opportunity to give Greely a two-goal lead before the break.
After collecting a lead pass from Allie Morrell, Hutnack moved in on Harwood all alone but was denied.
Waynflete had a pair of chances in the opening half to score first, both off free kicks from a dangerous distance. Walker Foehl took the shots, both handled relatively easily by Beaulieu.
“They came out flying and then it settled down and I thought we kind of grabbed a little bit of the play for a while,” said Waynflete Coach Todd Dominski. “Then it kind of switched back around in the second half when our legs kind of got a little tired.”
