At one time or another, hasn’t everybody said to him- or herself: “Jeez, I sure wish I had a giant yellow frankfurter I could drive to work today.”
Or, “Why can’t I take the kids to school in a chocolate bunny rabbit?”
On Friday, Oct. 12, four similarly outlandish “art cars” will roll into town to raise money for, and reintroduce young people to, America’s national parks — and the L.L. Bean Bootmobile will be leading the parade.
The iconic Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, Just Born PEEPSTER Car and Lindt Chocolate Gold Bunny Car will rendezvous at the Interstate 95 Northbound Service Area in Kennebunk early that morning. Led by the Bootmobile, the quartet of automotive caricatures will caravan up the highway into Freeport, arriving about 11 a.m.
The assembly is for the first-ever Art Car Campout, to be held Saturday, Oct. 13, at L.L. Bean’s Discovery Park, 95 Main St., from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
A cookout is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
During its year-long centennial, the retailer has pledged $1 million to help get kids outdoors. Each person who attends the art car camp and cookout will help by generating a dollar toward that goal. More than $975,000 has been generated thus far, spokeswoman Laura Carlson said.
