BIDDEFORD — The Biddeford volleyball team played for something more than just a win on Monday night, and it showed as the Tigers rolled to a 25-4 first set win to beat Kennebunk 3-0.

The Tigers hosted the Rams in a “Volley for a Cure” game to support breast cancer awareness, and both teams, and many fans, wore pink to show their support.

“I think the girls were really pumped up about just doing this whole awareness day,” said Biddeford head coach Ruth Shaw. “I think they were just running high. They were on a mission.”

The Tigers got off to about as good a start as possible, as they took only three service rotations to secure the first game. After jumping out to a 4-2 lead, the Tigers scored nine straight points with Bailey Cote serving. After Kennebunk scored its third point of the set, Biddeford reeled off 11 consecutive points with Katelyn Lebreux serving. The teams then traded points to close out the set.

The Rams wouldn’t go down without a fight, however, and gave Biddeford trouble in the second set. Kennebunk took a 3-2 lead before Lebreux served the Tigers to seven straight points. The Tigers didn’t score more than two points in a row after that though, as Kennebunk forced Biddeford into long volleys. The deficit Lebreux created was too much for the Rams, and Biddeford took the set 25-20. Still, Kennebunk coach Craig Richardson said he was happy to see his team fight back.

“I was very pleased with the girls. I told them in between the games, ”˜we just have to start playing our game. Relax a little bit, and it’ll come. Show a little dedication and a little hustle,’ and we absolutely did that,” said Richardson.

Biddeford got off to another fast start in the third game, and Shaw used fresh bodies off the bench to wear out a beaten Kennebunk team. The Tigers scored the first six points of the set, and scored nine consecutive points later to take a commanding 21-6 lead. With mostly bench players on the court, the Tigers closed out the match.

“That was awesome. They’ve got a lot of confidence, and that’s what it’s all about,” said Shaw, talking about her young players finishing out the match. “It’s good for them, not just for this game, but for the next one, and the next one, and next year, when they’re going to have to be that person.”

Biddeford will face a stiff test in its next match, as it takes on 8-2 Gorham on the road on Friday.

Kennebunk next faces Falmouth at home on Wednesday.
