AUGUSTA — School gardens around Maine will hold open-house events on Saturday to showcase the effort of students and highlight the many benefits of educational gardening programs.

Participating school systems include Scarborough, Bath, Saco, Portland, Standish, Waldoboro and South Berwick. The open-house events are being coordinated through the Maine School Garden Network, according to a news release.

In Bath, the Regional School Unit 1 L.O.C.A.L. Garden on the corner of High and Lemont streets will be open to the public from 10 to 11:30 a.m. The acronym stands for Leading Our Community in Agricultural Learning.

Events will be free and open to the public. Visitors can expect a variety of garden related activities, including garden tours, gardening demonstrations, games, food tasting and garden-themed artwork.

MSNG is a group that believes in the value of teaching children to garden and who encourage the development of gardening programs in Maine schools, according to a news release. The Network’s mission is to promote and support educational gardens for youth. For information, visit www.msgn.org.
