BRUNSWICK
The wooded walking trail behind Mid Coast Hospital has been restored and is ready to be reopened.
A ceremony is scheduled to mark the occasion at 3:30 p.m. Thursday in the Healing Garden directly behind the hospital’s cafe at 123 Medical Center Drive.
Created in 2001, the 3,300- foot-long trail wends its way through forested wetlands and marshes between the hospital and Thompson’s Brook estuary. Used for recreation and therapy by patients and staff, the trail also is open to the public.
To celebrate its 11th anniversary, the trail has been given an overhaul. New bark mulch was laid in bare spots and trailside tree growth was limbed back.
The reopening will call attention to the many volunteers and sponsors of the trail and Healing Garden. Among them, a new bench will be laid in memory of U.S. Navy Capt. Charles F. Richelieu, who laid out the original trail route and whose family has helped to fund its creation and maintenance.
