Some of Jody Huntwood’s sixth-graders at Bath Middle School are planning to learn to play the harmonica, so that during the month of December they can play in downtown Bath on Saturdays to collect money to rescue one or maybe even two dogs from a kill-shelter in a southern state. Beau Buddy Rescues in Bath is teaming up with Huntwood to make this possible. Beau Buddy’s founder, Julie Damon, explained to the students Wednesday morning that they need to collect as much money as they can in order to realize their goal of adopting a dog, shipping it to Maine and placing it in a home. Two 8-week-old pitbull puppies, along with two older mixed breed pups, were brought to Huntwood’s class so the kids could see firsthand who would be benefitting from their efforts. Pictured below, standing, are teacher Jody Huntwood, Jessica Carves, Josh Sawyer and Janet Heard, a Beau Buddy assistant. The students, clockwise from bottom center, are Justin Stewart, Keegan Companion, Haleigh Willis, Margaret Keating, Emma Warner, Eva Machnitzky, Jennifer Wilbraham, Victoria St. Pierre, Kameron Harrison and Jackson Walker. When faced with the choice of playing with a green dog toy, a pink encased Blackberry and a new harmonica, the puppies at left choose the most expensive toy — the phone. At top, from left, are Machnitzky, Wilbraham, Huntwood, St. Pierre and Kameron Harrison.
