SCARBOROUGH (AP) — Maine State Police say a Portland man tried to run down a trooper along the Maine Turnpike and has been arrested.
Police say 23-year-old Matthew Cole drove off when Trooper Kyle Wells tried to pull him over for an expired registration. Police say Cole lost control of the vehicle at a Scarborough exit and went off the road.
The trooper was outside his vehicle when police say Cole began backing up toward him. Police say the trooper fired at Cole’s car and Cole was not injured. He was arrested, and placed in the Cumberland County Jail.
State police say Cole was charged with eluding a police officer and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
As is standard procedure, the trooper was placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the investigation.
