GEORGETOWN — Georgetown Working League’s 99th annual fair will be held Tuesday — rain or shine — at Georgetown Central School, 52 Bay Point Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This fair is one of the state’s oldest, briefest and most popular community events, according to a news release from organizers. The first fair in 1913 raised just over $100 for the upkeep of the local Baptist church. By 1939, when fair revenues amounted to $245.71, members voted gifts of $10 each to the community cancer and Christmas funds and later, during the war, to the Red Cross.
In 1977, a group of League volunteers created a quilt to be raffled at the fair and decided that the revenues would benefit the community at large.
Although it still lasts for only four hours, and still takes place the second Tuesday in August, the fair now raises close to $15,000 in support of Georgetown’s fire and ambulance services, its library and several scholarships. The quilt raffle is widely anticipated each year, the news release continues. A small group spends each winter crafting them.
This year’s quilt, “Marshscape,” is made of subtle batik fabrics in shades of blue, green, lavender and ivory. The centerpiece is an intricately appliquéd and embroidered snowy egret in a background of shallow water marshland that reflects the Georgetown landscape.
The fair also includes bargains at the white elephant and jewelry tables, face painting, and homemade pies, cakes, cookies and more will be available for purchase. Lunch tickets are available at the door for a fresh lobster or turkey roll, fresh fruit and blueberry cake. Kids’ lunches include a hot dog, potato chips and lemonade. Local musicians will provide live music.
The art tent will be located behind the school adjacent to the craft demonstration and sales tent, displaying works for sale by Georgetown artists and artisans.
Raffle tickets for “Marshland” are $1 each or seven for $5 and will be available at the fair until the 1 p.m. drawing.
The winner does not have to be present to win.
Raffle tickets for a vintage diamond ring, appraised at $3,675, will be offered as well. Those tickets are $10 each or three for $25. The final drawing for the ring will be right before Christmas.
Tickets are also available for purchase by mail at Georgetown Working League, Attn: tickets, P.O. Box 262, Georgetown, ME 04548.
