$50K library gift
The Friends of Walker Memorial Library announced at a fundraiser on Aug. 2 that it had received a $50,000 grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation.
The friends’ goal is to raise $500,000 for interior restoration at the library.
Poll workers needed
The city of Westbrook is looking for additional poll workers for Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Poll workers will be paid an hourly wage and training will be provided.

Martial arts students compete in nationals
John Kitonis, head instructor at Portland Blue Wave Taekwondo in Westbrook, said the school recently sent two athletes to the 2012 AAU Taekwondo National championships in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Abby Mattingly of Gorham and Miranda Shinn of Portland competed in both sparring and forms. Kitonis said both students represented Maine and their taekwondo school “extremely well” and Mattingly took home a bronze medal in forms. “I am extremely proud of both competitors for their hard work and dedication to the sport,” Kitonis said.
More than 2,000 competitors were on hand of all ranks and ages.

Free outdoor concerts
Maine Blues Mafia performs in a free concert Thursday. Aug. 9, from 5:15-7:15 p.m., at Saccarappa Park, as part of the Bands on the Boardwalk series. Upcoming bands are Kenya Hall Band, Aug. 16; Captain Ray & the Castaways, Aug. 23; and Model Airplane, Aug. 30.
Flashback will perform in a free concert from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at Riverbank Park on Main Street. The concert marks the finale of the summer concert series.
