Dodge makes decision to pull out of NASCAR

Faced with the impending defection of its main partner in stock car racing, Dodge has decided to withdraw from NASCAR competition at the end of this season.

The decision announced Tuesday impacts Dodge’s involvement in both the Sprint Cup Series and Nationwide Series. Penske Racing currently fields two Dodge Chargers in Sprint Cup and two Dodge Challengers in Nationwide, but Penske announced in February that it was switching to Fords for the 2013 season, leaving Dodge in the lurch.

Dodge, which earlier this year rebranded itself to SRT Brand and Motorsports, said the Penske move had an impact on the decision. SRT CEO Ralph Gilles said the company had been evaluating all its options for five months before making the decision on Friday.

DRUG REVEALED: Suspended NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger said he tested positive for a prescription drug typically used to treat attention deficit disorder.

Allmendinger said in an interview with ESPN that he took Adderall a couple of days before the race at Kentucky Speedway on June 30 because he was tired. He does not have ADHD or a prescription for the drug.

COLLEGES

FOOTBALL: Albany and Stony Brook accepted offers to join the Colonial Athletic Association football beginning 2013.

Albany has been playing in the Northeast Conference, winning the conference and reaching the FCS playoffs last season.

Stony Brook also made the FCS playoffs in 2011, winning the Big South title, and beat Albany 31-28 in the first round.

The additions will give the CAA 10 members next season, when Georgia State and Old Dominion move up to FBS and Rhode Island leaves for the Northeast Conference.

The other CAA football schools are Delaware, James Madison, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Richmond, Towson, Villanova and William & Mary.

Players’ names are being added to Penn State’s football jerseys for the coming season, the university announced, along with blue ribbons to show support for victims of child abuse.

The team’s generic look – blue-and-white, no names on jerseys – has long been a trademark and was associated with the buttoned-down style of former coach Joe Paterno, who was fired last year after his former assistant Jerry Sandusky was arrested on child molestation charges.

BASEBALL

FCBL: Grayson Porter expanded a 4-1 lead with a grand slam in the fifth inning and the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (22-27) went on for a 9-2 win over the visiting Martha’s Vineyard Sharks (25-26).

Porter also singled home a run in the first when the Raging Tide built a 3-0 lead.

CYCLING

DOPING: The World Anti-Doping Agency urged cycling’s governing body to support United States anti-doping officials and provide documents to help their case against Lance Armstrong.
