BRUNSWICK
Brunswick police charged a 35-year-old man with driving to endanger and failing to stop for an officer after they say he failed to stop for officers during successive motor vehicle stops Monday afternoon and at one point, threatened them with a clam rake.
Abraham M. Chipman, 35, of 76 Maine St., Apt. 10, was issued summonses for refusing to submit to arrest or detention, failing to stop for an officer, and driving to endanger.
Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said Deputy Chief Marc Hagan of the Brunswick Police Department said Brunswick police were contacted by Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office on Monday at 2:11 p.m., requesting they stop and hold a motorcycle driven by Chipman because Chipman allegedly had refused to stop for a deputy in Harpswell. Hagan said Chipman was located on Maine Street and stopped and held until the Cumberland County deputy arrived.
A short time later at 3:14 p.m., Brunswick police received a call from someone complaining a red truck operated by Chipman was operating erratically. At 3:36 p.m., officer Jason McCarthy located the red pickup truck on Maine Street and saw it changing lanes and driving erratically. At one point Hagan said the truck stopped on Maine Street and started spinning its tires while McCarthy was behind it. At that point McCarthy activated his emergency lights and initiated a traffic stop. When he initiated his lights, however, Hagan said Chipman jumped out of the truck and started screaming at the officer, “saying he was harassing him.”
Chipman then got back in his truck as McCarthy approached, spun the tires and took off. Chipman allegedly drove up Maine Street, turned onto Potter Street where he stopped.
McCarthy again put on his lights, but Chipman drove off again, Hagan said. McCarthy followed Chipman down Potter Street to Page Street with lights off, and ended up following him to Parkview Adventist Medical Center where Chipman stopped in the parking lot. He again started driving off as three officers on scene began to approach, but stopped again still in the parking lot.
“At that point he locked himself in the truck,” Hagan said, and police surrounded the vehicle. “And he grabbed a clam rake and started threatening the officers with the clam rake.”
Hagan said Chipman wouldn’t open the doors so “we ended up shattering a window to reach him.” Chipman allegedly refused to follow police commands and became physically aggressive, “so after a brief scuffle, he was placed in handcuffs,” and taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick for treatment and evaluation as he sustained an injury in the exchange. Hagan said Chipman was taken to Mid Coast Hospital because it is better equipped to deal with people with mental health issues.
McCarthy also sustained a cut during the skirmish from the glass and went to Mid Coast Hospital where he required several stitches, Hagan said.
Chipman has a Sept. 18 court date at West Bath District Court.
