FREEPORT
A 90-year-old Freeport man died late Sunday after an afternoon accident on Lower Mast Landing Road.
Freeport police responded around 1 p.m. to the crash where officers believe Bow Street resident John Rodrigues veered off the road and collided with a tree.
Police Chief Gerald Schofield said Monday that the cause of the accident is still under investigation, but officers on the scene suspected Rodrigues either had a medical emergency or fell asleep while behind the wheel of a 1999 red Ford pickup truck.
Rodrigues was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland following the accident. Schofield said that his department was notified around 1:30 a.m. Monday that Rodrigues died.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
