Brunswick man, 46, charged with sexual assault of child

A Brunswick man is being held at the Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on Wednesday night following his arrest earlier this week on charges he sexually assaulted a child under the age of 14.

Leslie R. Grant, who also goes by the name of Levi Grant, was arrested Monday at his home on Dunning Street. He has been charged with one count of gross sexual assault – a Class A crime.
Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel A. Merry said the 46-year-old Grant is alleged to have sexually abused children at a Bowdoinham home during 2000. The family met Grant and befriended him through their church.

Merry said the information about the alleged abuse was provided by the Sagadahoc County District Attorney’s Office in April. Police investigated the charges and interviewed the victim, which led to Grant’s arrest.

Grant is a registered sex offender. He was convicted of a similar incident in Lisbon in 2004.
Merry said he believes the abuse may have extended beyond Bowdoinham into other jurisdictions.

The investigation is ongoing and additional  charges may be filed.

“We believe multiple families are involved but at this point we really don’t know how many victims are out there,” Merry said.

Police hold Naples man, 29, in weekend holdup at pharmacy

A Naples man is in police custody following an investigation into a Windham pharmacy robbery that took place Saturday.

Investigators from the Windham Police Department, the Gorham Police Department and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday that they have apprehended 29-year-old Christopher G. McCue of Lake House Road.

McCue allegedly stole prescription drugs from Walgreens Pharmacy at 741 Roosevelt Trail.

McCue, who is being held at the Cumberland County Jail, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday.

LEBANON

Man, 44, injured in accident involving all-terrain vehicles

One person was injured after two ATVs collided on Orrills Hill Road on Wednesday afternoon.

Jason A. Cole, Lebanon’s assistant rescue chief, said one driver stopped in the roadway after encountering what Cole described as “massive bumps.” Part of the road in that area had been washed out.

A second ATV hit the rear end of the stopped ATV pushing each driver into the handle bars.

A 44-year-old Lebanon man was transported by ambulance to Frisbie Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.H., with injuries that were described as not life-threatening injuries. The other driver, a 13-year-old boy, was not hurt.

The accident took place around 4 p.m.

BOSTON

Coast Guard cutter Eagle visits Portland this weekend

A historic U.S. Coast Guard ship originally commissioned by the German Navy is visiting Portland. The Coast Guard says the cutter Eagle is scheduled to arrive in Portland on Friday.

The Eagle will be moored at the Maine State Pier as part of its 2012 cruise. It will be open for tours through Sunday.

Commanding officer Capt. Raymond “Wes” Pulver said he looks forward to having the community on board to meet the crew, cadets and officers.

The Eagle is 295 feet long. It has 24,000 square feet of sail and 6 miles of rigging. It’s the largest tall ship flying the Stars and Stripes.

It was built in 1936 in Hamburg, Germany, and was taken by the U.S. after World War II. It has served as a floating classroom since 1946.

Its homeport is New London, Conn.

No civil penalties imposed on former Alfred lawmaker

The Maine Ethics Commission won’t impose civil penalties on a former Republican lawmaker who’s serving a six-month jail sentence and been ordered to pay restitution for misusing money from the taxpayer-financed Clean Election fund.

The five-member commission decided Wednesday that David Burns of Alfred is already receiving enough punishment following his conviction on theft and forgery charges for diverting more than $2,500 of Clean Election money for personal purposes during his 2010 campaign.

Ethics Commission Chairman Walter McKee said Burns’ six-month sentence was significant for a misdemeanor conviction, especially for somebody without a previous criminal record.

The Bangor Daily News reported that Burns’ lawyer told the commission that Burns will have a hard enough time finding a job and money to pay restitution after his completing his sentence.

BRUNSWICK

Two brothers face charges after illegal gambling raid

Two men have been charged and authorities are investigating what they say appeared to be an illegal gambling operation in Brunswick.

The Times Record reported that state police holding a search warrant raided a building earlier this month and found about 10 people involved in gambling.

Sgt. Michael Zabarsky said troopers seized cash, poker chips, playing cards and a surveillance camera inside a gaming room.

Authorities later issued summons to 31-year-old Christopher Moulton and 29-year-old Dennis Moulton, his brother, on charges of unlawful gaming.

Zabarsky said the probe was continuing into the alleged gambling that may have been going on for months.

Christopher Moulton told the newspaper that there was more to the story than has been disclosed so far and that he’s hired lawyers to defend him.
