BOWDOINHAM
A series of farms in Bowdoinham will open their fields and barns to the public Sunday to celebrate Maine Open Farm Day.
Apple Creek Farm, located at 446 Millay Road, is a smallscale farm that has operated in Bowdoinham since 1985. The Galles focus primarily on pasture-based and grass-fed sheep and beef cows. They also sell raw wool to spinners and fiber artists, eggs from free-range hens, felted wares, hay and firewood.
Apple Creek Farm tours will take place from 10 a.m. to noon. Visitors can see the process of creating new pastures and meet the cows and sheep.
Stonecipher Farm, located at 1190 River Road (Route 24), will showcase one of Maine Farmland Trust’s Forever Farms. Hourly farm tours will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The farm is located on a 65- acre property where Ian and Tabitha Jerolmack grow organic vegetables, cut flowers and herbs. They recently added chickens and two baby sheep to the farm. “Come dig your own carrot bunch and have giant sprinkler fun,” an Open Farm Day release states.
Small Wonder Organics located on Browns Point Road is also one of the Maine Farmland Trust’s Forever Farms. Vehicles should park along Browns Point Road, and visitors can walk to the fields as directed by signs.
A mural painting will take place from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Farm tours are scheduled for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., both followed by tomato tasting. Live music and a hors d’oeuvres potluck will be offered from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Small Wonder Organics is a small organic vegetable farm on Merrymeeting Bay where Pete Engler and Sarah Trask grow almost every kind of vegetable in Maine, focusing on heirloom and specialty varieties. The farm also offers a summer tomato club and a fall community supported agriculture (CSA) program.
Life Force Farm is located at 71 Carlson Cross Road and was established in 2007 by Ben Dearnley.
“Dearnley studies organic agriculture to find ways to create the most nutritious and hardiest produce to last through the entire Maine year,” the release states.
The farm offers a winter CSA. Tour will be offered from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Bowdoinham’s summer concert series at Mailly Waterfront Park will feature the Blues Buzzards, described as a “horn driven blues and rock band with a Motown groove,” from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
