AUGUSTA (AP) — A state board has voted to approve two more charter schools in Maine.
The schools approved Tuesday, as well as a school approved last month, will be the state’s first charter schools. Forty states already allow them.
Charter schools are public schools that operate independently of the local school district.
The schools approved by the Maine Charter School Commission include a science oriented high school in Portland to be known as the Baxter Academy School of Technology and Science, and an elementary school in Cornville.
Last month, the commission approved plans for the Maine Academy of Natural Sciences, a magnet school that has operated since September in Fairfield.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
