BATH — A Phippsburg teenager jumped from the Sagadahoc Bridge this morning, landing near Commercial Street in Bath and sustaining serious — but, as of press time, not fatal — injuries.
Bath police and rescue rushed to Commercial Street at approximately 8 a.m. today in response to reports that a male teen had jumped from the bridge and landed on the street near the pumping station, Bath Police Sgt. Robert Savary confirmed.
Bath Police Chief Mike Field contacted the teen’s mother and took her to Maine Medical Center, where her son was transported with serious injuries.
His condition was not available at press time.
Savary said the teen plunged from a section of the bridge that is approximately 50 feet above the ground.
“It was totally unexpected, from all the pieces we’ve put together so far,” Field said early this afternoon. While police will continue to investigate the incident, he added, “Obviously our chief concern is for the boy and getting him the help he needs.”
