PORTLAND (AP) — At least nine people have been displaced by an apartment house fire in Maine’s largest city that investigators say was started by children playing with sparklers.
City officials say everyone made it out of the building to safety late Monday morning, but thick plumes of smoke could be seen from downtown as firefighters battled the blaze.
The Fire Department says the fire was started by two minors who lit sparklers using a toaster, which started a fire on a bed.
Authorities say at least seven units were significantly damaged by the fire.
