BATH (AP) — A veteran Maine state trooper convicted of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 14 has been sentenced to spend less than two years of a five-year jail sentence behind bars.

Prosecutors say 46-year-old Gregory Vrooman was sentenced last week to serve 21 months of a five-year sentence, with the remaining time suspended.

Vrooman, of Nobleboro, was convicted in April guilty of multiple counts related to unlawful sexual contact with a minor.

Prosecutors told The Portland Press Herald that Vrooman’s lawyer has indicated that there will be an appeal.

The defense attorney had previously questioned the girl’s allegations.

Vrooman was assaulted in court by a Massachusetts man in April right before he was convicted.
