O’Hara siblings excel

Molly O’Hara has been named to the dean’s list at the University of New England for the spring semester and has also been accepted into the UNE College of Pharmacy graduate program. O’Hara is the daughter of Judy and Westbrook City Councilor John O’Hara.

Their son, John O’Hara, an accomplished pianist, will be performing a ragtime musical score, which he composed, at the Blue Hill Pops concert on Tuesday. July 3, in Blue Hill.

Westbrook firm honored for

safety record

E.S. Boulos Co. of Westbrook was among six firms presented awards for workplace safety last week at the annual meeting of workers’ compensation insurer MEMIC.

E.S. Boulos has been an electrical construction and maintenance contractor for more than 90 years, employing from 100 to 300 people. Safety is an integral part of this company from officers to the rank and file. A job safety plan is completed every day and many workers are required to complete a four-year training program through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

Walker summer reading kickoff

All young students are welcome to attend on Tuesday, June 19, at 5 p.m. Walker Memorial Library’s kickoff party when children will have the opportunity to register for its summer reading program.

The summer reading program at the library, 800 Main St., is open to all students up to age 13.

At 5:30, the magic of Conjuring Carroll will amaze students as he brings his books, dreams and magic program to life. Families are welcome to go, have fun, register for summer reading, and enter for a chance to win door prizes.

Children’s summer reading programs in public libraries seek to enhance and maintain reading skills students have gained during the school year. Daily reading is the best plan for maintaining hard-earned skills.

In addition, adults are also enjoying their own summer reading program. This year’s theme is “Between the Covers.” Adults are challenged to read six books in eight weeks. Prizes will be awarded in random drawings each week to successful readers.

read to a dog?

As part of Youth Services at Walker Memorial Library’s summer reading program, specially trained and certified dogs will be at Walker on Thursday, June 21 from 1-2 p.m.; Friday, June 22, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; Thursday, June 28, 1-2 p.m.; and Friday, June 29, 11a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Dates for July and August have not been set yet.

The program is especially helpful for youngsters who are new readers, struggling readers, or shy readers. Any student who is interested in practicing his/her reading is welcome, but registration is required.

City band in concert

Westbrook City Band will be in concert 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, at Riverbank Park.

The concert is the first in a series of free summer concerts.
